The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stressed that the Assad regime’s vote against condemning Russia at the United Nations does not represent the true stance of the Syrian people. It said that it was the vote of a subordinate, namely Bashar al-Assad, for his master Vladimir Putin.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the SOC condemned the Russian brutal invasion as a violation of the sovereignty of an independent state that is a member of the United Nations. The SOC also stated that the Russian aggression aims to ruin the life of a people whose only sin was to aspire to live in freedom and democracy.
“The Syrian people reaffirm their solidarity with the friendly Ukrainian people as it commends their heroic resistance to the brutal Russian invasion. The Syrian and Ukrainian peoples are facing a common enemy: the regime of Vladimir Putin.”
The SOC added: “The Assad regime’s shameful support for the Russian regime’s invasion of Ukraine, its terrorizing of its people, and forcing hundreds of thousands of the Ukrainian out of their homes is consistent with the criminal nature of the Assad regime and its terrorist practices against the Syrian people.”
The SOC stressed that the failure to expel the Assad regime from the United Nations and from all international organizations is one of the gravest mistakes of the international community in Syria.
Moreover, the SOC stressed that the criminal Assad regime has long lost legitimacy, and that it does not represent Syria or its people in international forums whatsoever.
“The international community must confront the Russian invasion of Ukraine inasmuch it is required to correct its policies in Syria.”
