Ahmad Baccora, Coordinator of the Refugee and Displaced Persons Working Group of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), said that the military escalation in Lebanon, along with Israeli occupation attacks on Syrian refugee camps there, is forcing hundreds of thousands of Syrians to flee back to Syria. He stressed that Syrians are returning under difficult conditions and an uncertain fate due to the Assad regime’s ongoing criminal practices, alongside its security apparatus and sectarian militias.
In a press statement, Baccora reiterated that Syria remains unsafe for the return of refugees, citing ongoing violence, arrests, and torture—the very reasons that initially drove refugees to flee. He added that monthly and annual human rights reports consistently confirm these dangers.
Baccora highlighted that solutions in these complex conditions are very limited and require genuine international cooperation. He called on the international community to establish effective mechanisms to monitor the situation of Syrians arriving back in the country and to ensure their security and protection from any harm.
He also urged the international community to pressure the Assad regime to halt its criminal practices against those fleeing from Lebanon and to stop the bombardment of liberated areas in northern Syria, which has triggered new waves of displacement in recent days.
