Coordinator of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Department of Refugee Affairs, Adnan Rahmoun, called on the UN relief agencies to urgently intervene to save an infant in al-Rukban refugee camp.
Rahmoun said that the baby girl, Yaqin, was born less than a month ago with a cleft palate and needs an urgent surgery outside the camp. Residents of the camp suffer tragic conditions as a result of the blockaded imposed on the camp by the Assad regime and its allies.
Rahmon stressed that the tightened years-long blockade imposed on the camp by the Assad regime and its allies constitute a war crime that the international community is silent about. He called for the immediate lifting of the blockade and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to the trapped civilians.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee, a local independent rights watchdog, said that al-Rukban camp is in imminent danger, warning of the serious deterioration of living and health conditions.
The Committee pointed out that residents of the camp suffer from lack of potable water, medicine, and scarcity of basic foodstuffs. It added that nearly 6,000 people live in the camp who are in front of two options: either die of starvation or move to the regime-held areas where they will be at the risk of detention and death under torture.
