The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) called on the United Nations to strip the Assad regime of legitimacy, expel its representative, and grant Syria’s seat to the SOC as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
The calls were made at a regular meeting of the SOC’s political committee. Members of the committee stressed that the Assad regime illegally occupies Syria’s seat at the United Nations and is carrying out Putin’s orders. They added that the regime uses its UN seat to solely serve its interests and those of the Russian regime.
The committee pointed out that the Assad regime’s latest vote at the UN General Assembly against a resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine does not represent Syria. It stressed that the Syrian people stands in solidarity with the friendly Ukrainian people, adding that the vote confirmed the regime’s submissiveness to Putin.
The committee made it clear that the Assad regime practices various types of crimes and threatens regional and international peace, as is the case of Russia, which today threatens international peace by violating international law and attacking a sovereign state.
The committee decided to communicate with the United Nations in order to give Syria’s seat back to its rightful owner, which is the Syrian people.
