President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, condemned the Assad regime’s issuance of threats to the people of Suwayda to burn the city in response to the mass anti-regime demonstrations that took place in the city last Sunday. Al-Meslet stressed that the Assad regime insists on pursuing a bloody military approach and will not change its tactics no matter how long it takes.
Al-Meslet pointed out that the Assad regime always meets peaceful protests with live bullets, and sends its agents to join the protests with the aim of derailing them from their path and tarnish their image.
He saluted the brave people of Suwayda who confronted the Assad regime’s security forces, and emphasized their demands to overthrow the Assad regime and regain freedom and dignity.
The local newspaper Enab Baladi on Wednesday quoted Fahd al-Balous, son of the founder of the Men of Dignity Movement, Sheikh Wahid al-Balous, as saying that the head of the Air Force Intelligence Department, Major General Ghassan Ismail, threatened the dignitaries in Suwayda with burning and killing.
Last Sunday, ant-regime demonstrators chanted “the people want to overthrow the regime” as they denounced the deterioration of living conditions and the regime’s inability to secure the people’s basic needs, especially heating fuel, electricity and other basic services and commodities.
Demonstrators clashed with the Assad regime’s forces stationed in the police command headquarters, which opened live fire at the protestors, killing one person and injuring dozens.
