The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) held a press conference on Tuesday to discuss Arab normalization with the Assad regime and its return to the Arab League. President Salem Al-Meslet emphasized that the decision implies the return of a regime that carries out the Iranian agenda.
Al-Meslet stated that the Arab League rewarded the Assad regime for 12 years of killings, displacements, destruction, and the disappearance of tens of thousands of people, in addition to the millions of displaced people who sought refuge outside Syria. He stressed that countries are free to make decisions regarding their security and stability, but stability does not come from those who have committed crimes against the Syrian people.
According to Al-Meslet, whoever commits crimes against the people of Syria will not hesitate to destabilize the region or abandon Iran’s agenda against the countries of the region. He warned that the Assad regime would only bring terrorism and drugs to neighboring countries.
Al-Meslet expressed his appreciation for the support of the brotherly countries during the years of the revolution, and he did not doubt their intentions. Still, he was certain about the intentions of the Assad regime. He stated that the Syrian people still need their brothers, and they will not turn away from them even if they make the wrong decisions.
Al-Meslet said that the Syrian people have fought and are still fighting against a hateful agenda that spreads poison in every direction. He noted that these poisons are not only aimed at Syria but also beyond that to neighboring countries. He expressed his astonishment at the opening of doors today to this agenda, warning that toxins would be released from a seat that the brothers thought was granted to Syria.
Al-Meslet stressed that this normalization will not change the truth, and what is happening in Syria is a great popular revolution against a criminal who brought various occupations to kill Syrians, displace them, and destroy the country to remain in power. He added that the SOC and the forces of the revolution all reject this normalization and believe that it represents a disregard for the Syrian people’s will and demands.
The SOC, as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, was not consulted about returning Syria’s seat to the Assad regime, according to Al-Meslet. He stated that the decision provides an opportunity for the regime to enhance its brutality against the Syrian people and is a great shock to the people who were waiting for their brothers to extend a helping hand.
Al-Meslet called for the implementation of UN Resolution 2254 and a comprehensive review of all work, correction of mistakes, and consultation at a broader popular level and on common ground, and appending of institutions with components and people who have their role, influence, and status.
