The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) strongly emphasized the gravity of the recent revelation by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons that the Assad regime was responsible for the chemical attack on the town of Douma in 2018. It stressed that this revelation places the international community in a position of responsibility to eliminate the threat that the Assad regime poses to the Syrian people, who have been subjected to a wide range of killings and violations at the hands of the regime and its allies.
In a press release issued on Friday, the SOC called for holding the Assad regime accountable and fully implementing Security Council Resolution 2118 (2013) in light of this information. “This includes imposing measures against the regime under Article 7, as outlined in Article 21 of the resolution. This call to action is further reinforced by the findings of several impartial international organizations that have proven the Assad regime’s responsibility for launching chemical weapons attacks against the Syrian people.”
The SOC underscored that the “continued existence of the criminal Assad regime signifies the absence of international justice and prolonging its rule only perpetuates the Syrian tragedy. The Syrian people continue to make sacrifices in pursuit of a solution that aligns with their aspirations for a free and democratic Syria, free of the Assad regime and its oppressive apparatus.”
