The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) called on the Lebanese authorities to interrogate Charbel Tarabeih, a resident of Majdal al-Aqoura in the Byblos district, and the security officers of the Qartaba Division of the Byblos Intelligence Bureau, who abused Syrian refugees in the region.
Member of the SOC’s political committee, Zuhair Muhammad, said that the physical abuse of Syrian refugees in Lebanon constitutes a grave violation of international conventions that guarantee the right of refugees. He stressed the need to hold those responsible accountable and to ensure that such violations are not repeated.
Activists published videos showing a group of Syrian refugees in Lebanon being brutally beaten and humiliated by being forced to hold potatoes in their mouths after they were stripped down to their underwear.
Activists pointed out that Tarabeih had accused the Syrian refugees who work for him of stealing a sum of money in order to avoid paying their dues.
Muhammad pointed out that the irresponsible statements of some Lebanese officials against the Syrian refugees are to blame for fueling the hate speech between the two brotherly peoples and encouraging criminals to abuse Syrian nationals.
Muhammad stressed that the terrorist Hezbollah Militia is one of the major reasons for the ongoing tragedy in Syria and the displacement of Syrians in view of the grave crimes this militia is committing against defenseless civilians.
