The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) held a special meeting to discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its impact on the situation in Syria. The meeting brought together SOC’s President Salem Al-Meslet, President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission Anas Abdah, and members of the political committee and General Assembly.
Participants stressed that what is happening in Ukraine now is similar to what Russia has been doing in Syria since 2015 as it targets hospitals, public markets and residential areas to impose a military solution on Syria. They called on the international community to put pressure on Russia to force it to stop its aggression against Syria and Ukraine.
They also called for assuming a tough international stance against international bullying of sovereign countries and threatening international peace and security. They also called for activating the Uniting for Peace principle to rein in Russia.
Moreover, participants stressed that the international community must correct its mistakes in Syria and stop the Russian expansion by supporting the Syrian National Army and supplying it with advanced equipment and anti-aircraft guns as it did with Ukraine. They made it clear that supporting the Syrian National Army will limit Putin’s military options in Syria.
Participants pointed out that if Putin succeeds in his brutal war in Ukraine, he will not stop at the borders of Ukraine as his ambitions will extend to new countries deeper in Europe. They stressed that ending the Russian aggression in Syria will prevent Russian from threatening NATO countries from the Russian bases on the Syrian coast.
