On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Department of Refugee Affairs Rawah Asfour said that while the world celebrates the struggle of women to obtain the right to education, work, vote and running for elections, Syrian women are still enduring immense suffering at the hands of the murderous Assad regime.
Asfour, who is also Regional Director of the International Organization of Female Detainees, lamented the catastrophic decline in women’s rights at the global, reginal and local levels. She pointed out that Syrian women are the most affected by wars, citing the increasing violations and pressures that women are being exposed to everywhere in the world.
Asfour pointed out that since the early days of the revolution, Syrian women have courageously participated in demonstrations and in coordinating peaceful protests. They have also helped shelter wounded demonstrators and contributed to media coverage of the revolution.
Asfour stressed that since the beginning of the revolution, Syrian women have spared no effort to serve the cause of freedom and dignity in the country. She said that Syrian women, like men, have been subjected to harassment, arrest, torture, enforced disappearance, physical abuse and murder at the hands of regime forces.
Asfour stressed that Syrian women are continuing their struggle for freedom and dignity, adding that achieving transitional justice requires a genuine political solution through the implementation of UN resolutions and agreements that stress women’s important role in conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
