On the occasion of the 9th anniversary of the Assad regime’s chemical attack on Eastern Ghouta, members of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee stressed that letting Assad at large after the massacre encouraged him to commit hundreds of massacres with the use of internationally prohibited weapons against the defenseless Syrian people.
SOC’s Vice-President, Abdulahad Astepho, said that “nine years have passed since the massacre of the century which the Assad regime committed against the people of eastern Ghouta with the use of sarin. The Assad regime is showing unique brutality against the Syrian people, who were left alone to face the killing machine, amid total international failure to hold the criminals accountable.”
SOC’s Vice President, Abdul Hakim Bashar, said: “Today we remember one of the most horrible massacres against the Syrian people, which is the chemical attack by which the Assad regime killed more than 1,400 civilians in eastern Ghouta nine years ago. Holding the perpetrators accountable is a legitimate right that Syrians have been demanding ever since.”
Vice-President, Ruba Habboush, said: “The chemical attack that targeted eastern Ghouta in rural Damascus in August 2013 exposed the falseness of the red lines, and encouraged the murderous Assad regime to carry out more chemical attacks and many crimes with the use of barrel bombs and other deadly weapons. We still demand accountability for the murderers as we will not forget the children’s last gasps.”
Secretary of the SOC’s political committee, Abdul Majeed Barakat, said: “Holding Bashar al-Assad accountable is one of the Syrian people’s major demands. Nine years ago, Assad gassed 1,400 Syrian civilians in eastern Ghouta near Damascus with the sarin nerve agent. Whoever normalizes relations with the Assad regime is a supporter of terrorism and a traitor to humanity.”
