Vice-President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, Abdul Hakim Bashar, met with a delegation from the Afrin Civil Council in the city of Erbil in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.
Bashar talked about the political and field situation across Syria, as well as the latest developments in the political process in Geneva. He regretted the absence of the prospect of a political solution in light of the Assad regime’s rejection of all files on the negotiating table in Geneva.
Bashar spoke in detail about the difficult conditions in the Afrin region, and the difficulties facing the return of the people of Afrin, especially those posed by the PYD militia, which portrays Afrin as “hell on earth” in order to prevent anyone from returning to their homes and lands. He said that the SOC, in cooperation with Turkey, is seeking to solve all problems and facilitate the return of people to their places of origin.
Members of the SOC, Shallal Kaddo and Imad Barho, stressed the importance of cooperation between the SOC and the Afrin Civil Council, by intensifying efforts to improve services in Afrin and the rest of the liberated areas. They also stressed the need for civil society organizations to distance themselves from political and field contradictions.
For its part, the delegation of the Afrin Civil Council thanked the SOC for holding such meetings. It stressed their importance in strengthening cooperation between them and the active forces in the Afrin region, which is going through difficult circumstances that requires all parties to cooperate to serve the interests of the people of the region.
The two sides also stressed the need to hold more meetings, strengthen cooperation and coordination, and intensify joint efforts to face the upcoming challenges.
The Afrin Civil Council was established in Europe in 2018 at a general conference that was held in Germany in which a large number of Afrin residents participated.
The Council defines itself as “a non-governmental, non-profit organization that focus on the issue of the homeland and the land, and works in the homeland and abroad.”
