The political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) met to address the impact of the earthquake that hit northwestern Syria and took decisive measures to alleviate the disaster’s effects on those affected.
Abdul Majeed Barakat, Secretary of the political committee, stated that the SOC and Syrian Interim Government (SIG) have collaborated with the Civil Defense Corps, Assistance Coordination Unit, and relief organizations since day one to address the damages caused by the earthquake.
Barakat revealed that the SOC has initiated contacts with the UN, international organizations, and friendly countries to provide support and aid to the search and rescue teams and displaced individuals. He emphasized that the large scale of the disaster requires collective efforts and the SOC has formed an emergency committee to monitor the damage at all levels.
Ayman Al-Asimi, a member of the SOC, talked about the SOC’s two-pronged approach to the earthquake, diplomatic and humanitarian. Al-Asimi criticized the international community’s lack of response to the victims and the insufficient aid that arrived at an inappropriate time, despite the open borders between Türkiye and Syria.
Al-Asimi called on the international community not to let the Assad regime exploit the earthquake for political gain and stressed that the response to the disaster is solely a humanitarian issue.
