The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) expressed its outright rejection of the visit of the head of the European Union delegation to the Assad regime-held areas, especially as the visit coincides with the upcoming ninth anniversary of the regime’s chemical attack on eastern Ghouta, a crime that was condemned by the International Independent Commission of Inquiry on Syria.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the SOC stressed the need for maintaining the international isolation of the Assad regime, which is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians and the displacement of millions more. The SOC also stressed that any rapprochement and acceptance of this murderous regime will contradict the political solution and makes it useless, let alone further prolonging the Syrian tragedy.
“Since its outbreak in 2011, the great Syrian Revolution has been a just cause of a people who rose up against tyranny to demand freedom and dignity. Standing on the side of the Syrian people is a moral responsibility that cannot be shirked,” the SOC added.
The SOC went on: “It is also a legal responsibility represented in commitment to UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which the Syrian people hope it will help bring about a political transition in accordance with this resolution, paving the way for building a new Syria in which the values of freedom, justice and dignity prevail, away from the murderous Assad regime.”
“Every international resolution that would prolong the life of the Assad regime will inevitably worsen the tragedy and increase the number of deaths, the displaced and detainees. Indeed, the Assad regime’s policy has not changed whatsoever, with murder and terrorism still rooted in its structure and which it cannot give up over time.”
