The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) condemned the recent surge in aggressive actions by Iranian militias within Syria. The missile strikes on northern Syria, particularly the northern Idlib countryside, underscore Iran’s persistent strategy to undermine security and stability in both Syria and the broader region.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the SOC said that this escalation vividly illustrates that areas under the control of the Assad regime provide fertile ground for militias with terrorist affiliations, perpetuating violations and terrorist activities. These actions hinder the establishment of a conducive environment for any meaningful political process in Syria, directly jeopardizing civilian lives and exacerbating the suffering of the Syrian people, the SOC added.
“The lack of international intervention and the failure of the international community to accord the Syrian crisis the necessary attention have further complicated the situation. This negligence has allowed the Assad regime to facilitate the influx of the Iranian threat into Syria, enabling Iranian militias to perpetrate violations amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity across various regions.
The recent use of ballistic missiles in these attacks constitutes a perilous escalation and a blatant defiance of international laws.”
The SOC urgently called upon the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in maintaining global peace and security, particularly in Syria. It urged concerted efforts to counter those who pose a threat to peace in Syria and the region, with a specific focus on Iran and its proxies.
Furthermore, the SOC emphasized the imperative of eliminating all impediments to achieving a political transition in Syria, emphasizing the full and rigorous implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
