The Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Haytham Rahmeh, decried the misleading information spread by Director of the World Food Program (WFP) in Syria Corinne Fleischer who published false information and about the United Nations response to the earthquake-affected people in Syria, and claimed that the WFP distributed aid in northwest Syria. The photos that Fleischer published were taken in Aleppo, which is controlled by the Assad regime, not in northwestern Syria.
“In addition to the abject failure of the United Nations to help the afflicted Syrians in the liberated areas, Flescher behaves in an unprofessional manner and provides misleading information on social media,” Rahmeh said.
Rahmeh pointed out that allowing the Assad regime to distribute relief aid will only support it and its military machine, because of its theft and sale of aid or supplying it to its militias.
Rahmeh expressed his dissatisfaction with the United Nations and its organizations dealing with the disaster that befell Syria after the earthquake, as it failed to provide the rescue teams in the liberated areas with any equipment or supplies that would help them evacuate and save the earthquake victims. He said that the UN intervened several days after the disaster in an ineffective way.
Rahmeh stressed the need to address the problems in the structure of the United Nations and to correct the errors that caused wrong decisions against the Syrian people over many years. He called for an urgent international response to the earthquake victims by providing assistance that guarantees shelter, food and basic living necessities for the victims.
He added that there are thousands of Syrians now in northwestern Syria who are left out in the open and in dire need of shelter and all the necessities of life, including food, medicine and warmth.
