The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) condemned the retaliatory attacks and chaos that followed the murder of a Lebanese man in the town of Bsharre in Lebanon last week. It stressed that these regrettable incidents were a direct result of the Lebanese government’s failure to appropriately deal with the murder, allowing an individual case to snowball into a new crisis.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the SOC renewed its condemnation of the murder of the Lebanese citizen as it calls for the launch of a transparent investigation into its circumstance.
“We also reaffirm our rejection of retaliatory attacks on Syrian refugees in Lebanon, especially the eviction of dozens of households from their homes and setting their homes on fire,” the SOC added.
“We also condemn the Lebanese authorities’ failure to address the hate speech and incitement of hostility against Syrian refugees by some Local politicians. Indeed, whoever is involved in this provocative rhetoric must be held responsible before the law for the abuses and violations affecting Syrian refugees.”
The SOC warned of “the serious dangers of such crises and the possibility of their continuation and exacerbation, especially since chaos, lawlessness and international inaction will allow such crises to be exploited for purely political purposes.”
Moreover, the SOC stressed that “Syria refugees will return to their homeland once the conditions allow. The implementation of UN resolutions, achieving a political transition and the withdrawal of the terrorist Hezbollah militia are natural conditions for a dignified, safe return.”
“The SOC is closely following the developments in the situation in Lebanon through the Department of Refugee Affairs and the relevant departments. It thanks the Lebanese people and forces who have stood by the Syrian refugees in their ordeal, especially politicians and leaders seeking to protect Syrian refugees.” (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
