The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) said that the decision to tighten sanctions on the Iranian-backed terrorist organizations, chief among them is the Hezbollah militia, is of paramount importance.
In a press release issued on Friday, the SOC stressed that the recent decision by the US Treasury Department and the US State Department to slap new batch of sanctions on entities and individuals linked to the Hezbollah militia and Iranian intelligence represents an important and much-needed addition to the existing sanctions on the Assad regime and the individuals associated with it.
“The Syrian people are expecting more international sanctions that target all the Assad regime’s allies and its partners in crimes, including states, entities, and individuals,” the SOC added.
“Meanwhile, sanctions need to be employed to support a political solution and used as a leverage to push the Assad regime’s allies and backers towards forcing the regime to seriously engage in the political process.”
The SOC underscored that the international community must realize the urgency to dismantle the terrorist networks being run by Iran, Russia, and the Assad regime in the region, while bearing in mind that any delay in doing so will risk worsening the existing crises and the unjustifiable loss of more lives.
