President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, has urgently appealed to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, and the guarantors of the de-escalation agreements, urging them to fulfill their responsibilities and take immediate measures to halt the atrocities committed by the Assad regime forces and their allies against innocent civilians in Syria.
This plea follows the ongoing military escalation by the Assad regime forces and its allies in the city of Idlib and its surrounding areas. Al-Bahra emphasized that these almost daily attacks underscore the failure of the concerned organizations to effectively fulfill their duties toward civilians.
Al-Bahra further highlighted the Assad regime and its supporters’ persistent targeting of civilians and essential public facilities in Idlib and its countryside. He said that the use of white phosphorus and internationally banned cluster bombs demonstrates a blatant disregard for international laws and treaties, showcasing their disdain for the various international bodies and organizations responsible for enforcing them.
According to the Syrian Civil Defense, the Assad regime forces and their allies continued their bombing operations on Idlib and Sarmin, directing attacks towards vital areas, public facilities, and services. This resulted in the death of a girl and injuries to nine other civilians, including children.
The Civil Defense underscored that the bombing specifically targeted a public market and a mosque in the town of Sarmin, as well as residential neighborhoods and a school used as a shelter center for displaced people in Idlib city. The escalating violence in these regions demands urgent international attention and intervention to protect the lives of innocent civilians.
