The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) welcomed the Canadian Foreign Ministry’s taking of action to hold the Assad regime accountable for its gross violations of human rights in Syria and for its crimes against the Syrian people over the past decade.
In a press release issued on Monday, the SOC said that this move is “highly important as it stresses the need to hold the Assad regime accountable for its crimes and gross violations of international law. It also stressed outright rejection of impunity; underscores that human rights are non-negotiable, and emphasizes that sustainable peace will only be possible once those responsible for these abuses are held to account.”
The SOC called attention to the demands presented by member states of the UN Security Council in late 2020 for following up on procedures related to the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
“It is imperative that the international community exert real efforts to ensure follow-up on this issue and ensure that all perpetrators of violations are held accountable by fair judiciary,” the SOC added. “Action must be taken to oppose those who are promoting a world in which impunity, complete absence of law and accountability prevail. Failure in this regard will entail a heavy price for the future of the region and beyond.” (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
