The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) commended the new package of sanctions announced by the European Union on Monday, which specifically targets individuals from the Assad regime, as well as those associated with its leadership.
In a press release issued on Monday, the SOC said that it believes that putting pressure on this criminal regime, preventing any normalization with it, and working towards holding it accountable for its heinous crimes against the Syrian people, are crucial steps in the right direction.
“The Assad regime’s continuous perpetration of atrocities against the Syrian people, the resulting humanitarian catastrophe for millions of Syrians, and the illegal drug manufacturing and exportation to other countries, necessitates that the international community take a firm and decisive stand to end the crises caused by the regime. This includes achieving a political transition in line with UN Resolution 2254 and starting to prosecute the regime and its leadership,” the SOC added.
The SOC applauded the European Union’s contributions and positions and urges the implementation of UN resolutions. It also called upon all countries that seek to normalize relations with the Assad regime to reconsider their decisions, as this regime has not changed its criminal approach and has not taken any steps towards a political process that aligns with the aspirations of the Syrian people.
