Member of the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Jihad Marie, has welcomed the imprisonment sentence issued by a court in The Hague against a former high-ranking member of a pro-Assad regime militia. Marie emphasized the importance of activating international mechanisms to hold all perpetrators of war crimes accountable on a broader scale, urging the inclusion of regime symbols directly responsible for committing crimes.
Marie highlighted that holding those responsible for crimes in Syria is a crucial component of the political solution in the country, as outlined in UN resolutions on Syria, particularly the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254. According to Marie, this aspect cannot be overlooked.
On Monday, a Dutch court convicted a former high-ranking member of a pro-regime militia, identified only as Mustafa A, of illegal detention and complicity in torture, handing down a 12-year prison sentence. The conviction stemmed from A’s involvement in the 2013 arrest and inhumane treatment of a civilian while serving in a pro-regime militia.
Mustafa A was specifically found guilty of illegal detention and complicity in the torture of a Palestinian-Syrian man. The victim had been forcibly taken from his home at a refugee camp near the city of Aleppo and handed over to the Syrian Air Force Intelligence Service. Members of the service subjected him to repeated torture, according to the court’s findings.
