The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stressed that the international community must shoulder its responsibility to enforce its resolutions on Syria, most importantly UN Security Council resolution 2118 which threatened to punish any party that uses, transfers or stores chemical weapons in Syria.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the SOC said that the latest reports by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) proved the Assad regime’s responsibility for violations of UN resolution 2118 and refuted the Assad regime’s and Russia’s attempts to frame the armed opposition for the use of chemical weapons.
“Although one breach of UN resolution 2118 is more than enough to hold the Assad regime accountable, we have today multiple independent documents and reports confirming its responsibility for violating UN resolutions, especially resolution 2118, in dozens of occasions,” the SOC added.
The SOC pointed out that the findings of reports and reviews also confirmed that terrorism is one, that the Assad regime and ISIS are organically linked to each other, and that the main commonality between them is terrorism.
“Indeed, any further delay in the enforcement of international law and UN Security Council resolutions will only result in more violations and crimes in view of international inaction that amounts to betrayal of international legitimacy by those who are supposed to be its sponsors.”
The SOC called upon the UN Security Council and United Nations to assume their responsibilities regarding the Assad regime’s crimes against the Syrian people and enforcing a political solution. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
