Salim Idris, the Coordinator of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Office of Refugee Affairs, presented a comprehensive report to the political committee. In his presentation, he addressed the challenging circumstances faced by Syrian refugees, with a particular focus on the predicament of Syrian asylum seekers presently marooned on a Greek island.
The report referenced a letter dispatched by the Office to the SOC’s Department of External Relations, which detailed the dire situation of Syrian asylum seekers stranded in an island in Greece’s Evros River. The communication included a series of proposals, one of which entailed urging the UN Secretary-General to take prompt action. The report also highlighted the Office’s recent correspondence with the International Committee of the Red Cross and Human Rights Watch. These letters aimed to exert pressure on the Greek government, urging it to permit the entry of essential food and medical aid for those stranded.
Moreover, the report underscored the urgency of providing media support to the volunteer team committed to aiding the stranded asylum seekers. Additionally, the report called for offering financial assistance to volunteers in Greece, thereby facilitating their mobility within Greek territory.
