The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee held an extraordinary meeting to discuss the current situation in Al-Suwayda city. In attendance were also members of the General Assembly and representatives from the region.
Participants discussed the ongoing anti-regime demonstrations in Al-Suwayda and the calls for the overthrow of the Assad regime. They also discussed the response of the Assad regime and its security forces which set up checkpoints inside the city to suppress the demonstrations.
SOC’s President Salem al-Meslet saluted the people of Al-Suwayda, the grandchildren of Sultan Pasha al-Atrash, for the bravery they are showing in the face of the Assad regime. He expressed his pride in the awareness they possess, pointing out that the Syrian people reaffirmed their desire to overthrow the Assad regime.
Al-Meslet said: “Syria is rich with resources, but the corrupt, brutal regime has taken control of these resources and made them hostage to the Russian and Iranian occupiers. Syrians are now left to face a daily struggle do provide for themselves amid lack of the minimum necessities of life, especially water, electricity, food, food or education.” He stressed that this is a systematic policy of revenge to starve and humiliate the Syrian people.
Al-Meslet expressed his support for the demands of the people of Al-Suwayda, stressing that the demonstrations will eventually spread to other parts of the country. He also stressed that this regime is destined to fall and cannot continue to commit crimes against the Syrian people.
“Today we see anti-regime demonstrations in Al-Suwayda. Tomorrow we will see similar demonstrations in the Syrian coast, and all areas are under the control of the criminal regime. The suffering of our people in these areas is no less than the suffering of our people in the IDPs camps. The Syrian people deserve a free, dignified life away from the rule of this sinister family.
