Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) political committee, Abdul Majeed Barakat, presented a report on the work of the committee to the General Assembly at its 59th regular session.
Barakat gave an overview on the major activities carried out by the political committee, the results of its periodic meetings, its follow-up to field and political events, and the issues facing Syrians in host countries.
Barakat also spoke about the decisions and recommendations made by the committee, which included several issues, most importantly the amendment of the SOC’s bylaw, the follow-up to the Interpol issue, communication with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in order to fully implement UN resolution 2254, and keeping abreast with developments in the sixth session of the Constitutional Committee.
Barakat pointed out that the secretariat of the political committee followed the visit of the SOC’s delegation to the United States on the sidelines of the session of the UN General Assembly. He said that the committee followed the meetings that the delegation held and conveyed the proceedings and results of these meetings to the political committee. It also prepared reports and summaries on the outcomes of these meetings.
He also said that the secretariat also followed the sixth session of the Constitutional Committee, which was held in Geneva. The secretariat worked on the daily linking between the SOC’s representatives and the political committee as a reference for the SOC’s representatives in the committee. It also sought to inform the political committee about the developments and papers submitted by the three delegations and gave advice in the issues that arose during the session.
