President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, Nasr Al-Hariri, said that the General Assembly approved the National Discourse Document during its 52nd meeting which concluded on Sunday.
Al-Hariri said that the Document makes it clear that the Syrian revolution is the revolution of the Syrian people with all their components, which was manifested in the slogans that were welcomed by the majority of the Syrian people, which included freedom, dignity and justice.
He said that the slogan “the Syrian people are one” best summarizes the identity of the revolution and the people’s aspirations to bring about a radical change and establish a civil, pluralistic, democratic system of rule. Under this system, equality is ensured regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion, and sect. It will based on citizenship and guaranteeing basic rights through a modern constitution that is approved by the people in a general referendum, he added.
The Document focuses on the fact that rights and freedoms represent the essence of the cause of the Syrian people, and that the demands for freedom, justice and democracy guarantee dignity and equal citizenship for all Syrian citizens and ensure that it provides them with opportunities for creativity, development and prosperity.
Moreover, Al-Hariri indicated that the Syrian people yearn to ensure respect for the rights and freedoms enshrined in modern constitutions and in previous Syrian constitutions, especially the 1950 constitution, the Islamic and Arab Universal Declaration for human rights, and the two special international covenants.
The Document stresses that the SOC calls on the Syrian people to take action in order to stop the regime’s bloody approach, and force it to comply with international resolutions in political negotiations so as to make a transition to an alternative system of rule that uproots tyranny, factionalism, and corruption.
Al-Hariri added that the Document calls on the Syrian people everywhere to unite with the aim of saving the homeland and facing the serious challenges it faces and preserving its geographical, political, and social unity.
The Documents also calls for revitalizing the revolutionary movement and popular resistance in all its forms, including working to force out foreign forces and sectarian militias as well as resisting compromising the nation’s sovereignty and assets.
The Document stressed that the SOC is internationally recognized as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, not just an opposition body, Al-Hariri said, adding that the SOC is concerned with the various groups of the Syrian people.
Furthermore, Al-Hariri said that the SOC believes that it is responsible for all Syrian citizens, regardless of their views and affiliations, stressing that its goal of comprehensive and radical change goes beyond the sons and daughters of the revolution and the opposition forces to the general population of Syria. He also said that the SOC’s discourse is directed to all Syrians in order to assume responsibility for salvation away from the logic of revenge and alienation.
He underscored that the SOC calls for national reconciliation, transitional justice, strengthening national unity, civil peace, preserving the country’s geographic, political and social unity, and consolidating coexistence and interaction among all the Syrian people regardless of their intellectual, religious, and political affiliations.
