President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, on Wednesday held a virtual meeting with the UK Special Representative to Syria Jonathan Hargreaves to discuss the political process and the latest developments in Syria.
Al-Meslet stressed the need to push the political process in Syria forward so as to bring an end to the suffering of the Syrian people, pointing to the importance of continued cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid to avert a serious humanitarian crisis.
The two sides discussed the issues of detainees and refugees as Al-Meslet stressed the necessity of pressing for the release of detainees. He also stressed that the return of refugees can only be voluntary, safe and dignified, which cannot happen with the presence of the Assad regime.
For his part, Mr. Hargreaves commended the steps that the SOC has recently made as he reaffirmed his country’s support for the cause of the Syrian people and for political transition in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. He also reaffirmed the UK rejection of normalization of ties with the Assad regime and its return to the Arab League.
