President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, said that he is closely following the condition of Mrs. Laila Mohamed who was physically assaulted in Gaziantep on Monday.
Al-Meslet said that he had contacted Laila’s family to ascertain her condition and to stress that the SOC would follow up on the incident.
“Any attack on any person, no matter their age or nationality, is reprehensible. What happened to the elderly Syrian woman affects us all and cannot be accepted,” Al-Meslet said.
The Turkish authorities announced the launch of an investigation into the incident and that they would hold the attacker to account.
Al-Meslet stressed that the incident is an individual act that does not reflect the true nature of the friendly Turkish people, adding that Turkey is a state that is ruled by law and that guarantees the rights and dignity of both citizens and guests.
He warned of attempts by some people on social media to cause damage to the relationship between the two brotherly peoples. He stressed that such isolated incident does not represent the friendly nature of the Turkish people who have hosted millions of Syrian refugees and supported their revolution for the past eleven years.
