President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, Salem Al-Meslet, on Tuesday held a press conference in the Qatari capital, Doha, in which he spoke about the results of his official visit to the sisterly State of Qatar. He also talked about the meeting with Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and prominent Syrian personalities.
Al-Meslet stressed the cordial relationship with Qatar and its prominent role in supporting the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom, dignity and democracy. He also stressed the close relationship between the two sisterly countries and the need to work together to revitalize the political process and implement UN resolutions on Syria, especially the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN resolution 2254.
Al-Meslet spoke about his meetings with research centers and prominent Syrian personalities, including Riad Hijab and Moaz Al-Khatib. He also stressed the need to unify visions and efforts in order to better respond to the challenges facing the Syrian people and their revolution, and in a way that paves the way for achieving the Syrian people’s aspirations and reclaiming their rights.
Al-Meslet reaffirmed commitment to goals of the Syrian revolution, most importantly overthrowing the Assad regime, holding its criminals accountable, and bringing about a full political transition in accordance with UN resolutions.
He also stressed that normalization of ties with the Assad regime amounts to rewarding it for the crimes it is committing against the Syrian people. He pointed out that the Assad regime is mainly to blame for what is happening in the country, stressing that efforts by some countries to normalize relations with it is a serious mistake that will have dire consequences for regional stability and security.
