President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, Nasr Al-Hariri, sent a letter to US Vice President, Michael Pence, and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo regarding the signing of oil contracts with the PYD militia as constituting a threat to Syria’s unity and sovereignty.
“As the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, we denounce this step which clearly demonstrates the ambition to seize the natural resources of the Syrian people,” Al-Hariri said.
Al-Hariri stressed that “the SDF militia does not have the right to distribute the natural resources of Syria; as the natural resources of Syria belong to the Syrian people.”
“We would like to point out the seriousness of this measure. Siding with the existing de facto authority, which is a temporary authority produced by the circumstances of the war, may lead to dangerous consequences such as an anger among the people in the region that may evolve to an armed Kurdish-Arab conflict, and this could lead to new serious security disturbances.”
Al-Hariri called on the US administration to “reconsider the aforementioned agreement. We affirm our confidence regarding your commitment to fight terrorism, bring peace to the region, and to support the just cause of the Syrian people.”
“We stress the importance of reaching a comprehensive political solution in Syria, in accordance with the relevant resolutions, including UNSCR 2254 (2015), that fulfils the aspirations of the Syrian people, and which among other things will enable Syrian refugees to return to their homeland and will ensure fundamentally resolving the humanitarian crisis in Syria.”
Al-Hariri expressed his gratitude for the US’s leading role as a reliable ally to the Syrian revolution and people. “The United States has always been a sincere friend and a true supporter for the Syrian people in their just struggle for freedom, dignity and justice.”
