The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Studies and Documentation Office organized a symposium on the latest developments in political process, with the participation of activists and political researchers in rural Aleppo.

The symposium was supervised by the Secretary of the SOC’s political committee and Coordinator of the Studies and Documentation Office, Riyad Al-Hassan. Participants included Vice-president Ruba Habboush, Secretary-General Abdelbaset Abdullatif, member of the political committee Bahjat Atassi, member of the General Assembly Najib Rahmoun, and Coordinator of the SOC’s Office in rural Aleppo Ahmed Al-Shehadi.

Al-Hassan gave an overview on the developments in the political and negotiation process, the statements of major actors in Syria leading up to the formation of the Constitutional Committee, and the course of the previous rounds.

Al-Hassan talked about the Assad regime’s obstruction of the political process, its refusal to engage in it seriously, and Russia’s support for the regime. He stressed that the Assad regime and its backers insists on pursuing a military solution and refuse to engage in the political process.

Al-Hassan stressed that the SOC is committed to implementing UN resolutions and meeting the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, dignity and democracy. He reiterated the SOC’s calls on the United Nations to open the rest of tracks laid out in UN resolution 2254, indicating that the constitutional process is part of the solution and insufficient to achieve a solution in the country. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people’s unity within the same Syrian soil
is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its
symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes
against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
