Abdul Hakim Bashar, Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has strongly condemned the brutal bombardment launched by the Assad regime forces on civilians and civilian facilities in northwestern Syria since Thursday, even resorting to the use of internationally banned weapons.
Bashar emphasized that this criminal aggression by the regime demands a serious response from the international community. It underscores the urgent need for concrete action aimed at finding a political solution based on a political transition. This transition should involve the establishment of a transitional governing body with full powers, while placing a strong emphasis on holding accountable all those whose hands are stained with the blood of Syrians.
He further expressed that the international community’s failure to take decisive steps in reining in the Assad regime, holding it accountable for its crimes over the past years, has emboldened the regime to persist in committing further atrocities.
Bashar stressed that it is now imperative for the UN Security Council to take decisive measures concerning the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Assad regime. These crimes have involved the use of internationally prohibited weapons, a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2118 (2013), which explicitly prohibits the use of such weaponry.
