Vice-president of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) for Foreign Affairs, Abdulahad Astepho held a virtual meeting with the advisor in the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Anna Stina Svantesson, and discussed with her the latest field and political developments in Syria.
Astepho talked about the conditions in the IDP camps in northern Syria and the suffering of the IDPs as a result of the snowstorm that is hitting the region. He stressed that meeting the needs of the IDPs must be an urgent priority.
Astepho criticized the performance of international organizations and the international community regarding the disaster that befalls residents of the camps every winter.
He pointed out that the covid outbreak further worsened the conditions in the IDPs camps. He said that despite the efforts of the Syrian Interim Government, the situation still needs real international support to overcome all crises.
He gave an overview on the project to support the education of Syrian refugees in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region as he stressed the need to avoid any educational gap for the children of Syrian refugees.
The two sides also discussed the issue of accountability. Astepho pointed out that the SOC is seeking to establish an international mechanism to hold all war criminals accountable, especially the head of the criminal regime. He also said that the SOC is also following the developments in the prosecution of war criminals, stressing that ensuring accountability requires international cooperation and the concerted efforts of several parties.
