The Syria Recovery Trust Fund has announced the initiation of an agricultural project aimed at improving agricultural services supporting olive production and enhancing market-led, high-value olive supply chains in northern Aleppo.
Named “Supporting Olive Farmers in Northern Aleppo,” the project seeks to rejuvenate cooperative farmers’ associations, contributing to food security and economic growth in targeted areas. Direct beneficiaries are estimated to include one thousand farmers and their families, totaling 5,000 individuals.
The initiative responds to the crisis affecting the agricultural sector, particularly olive cultivation, a crucial component of Syria’s economy and cultural heritage. The project anticipates a positive impact on investment in olive tree-planted lands, increased olive cultivation, the introduction of new high-quality olive varieties, and the provision of essential services to reduce production costs.
Furthermore, the project aims to improve environmental conditions by eliminating the indiscriminate use of fertilizers and pesticides, promoting modern fertilization methods. Three olive growers’ associations will be established and supported, aiding primary production activities and assisting farmers in various aspects of olive production.
In a concerted effort, the project will supply one thousand farmers with high-quality agricultural inputs, including seedlings, fertilizers, pesticides, and picking and pruning equipment. Pesticide spraying campaigns will be organized to combat pests and diseases effectively. Additionally, two modern olive nurseries will be established to provide high-quality olive seedlings, contributing to the expansion of olive cultivation.
The project’s focus extends beyond tangible resources, as it aims to provide one thousand farmers with information and skills to implement improved agricultural methods, climate-smart agriculture techniques, and sustainable practices for olive production. Approximately 600 farmers will be given the opportunity to participate in meetings, fostering a strong community of olive farmers by exchanging experiences and addressing challenges faced.
During its implementation stages, the project will provide a platform for 150 farmers to participate in production exhibitions and competitions, strengthening the local olive industry and recognizing farmers’ efforts.
