The family of Abbas Khan, the British doctor who died while he was detained by the Assad regime, demanded that Assad and his close associates must be brought to justice. Khan’s sister called for defining those responsible for the brutal torture her brother was subject to in Assad’s prisons until he died. “If we want to talk about peace, we must first establish the rule of law, accountability and justice,” she said. Ahmad Jarba said that “the Assad regime has long been known for detaining and brutally torturing political dissidents. Thousands of citizens have been detained since the beginning of the revolution in 2011.” Furthermore, Jarba stressed that “the regime’s crimes must not go unpunished,” citing the latest trove of leaked photos of detainees killed under torture in Assad’s dungeons. “The perpetrators of these crimes must stand trial by the International Criminal Court. Khan’s sister said that “it was difficult to see these pictures. Starvation, electrocution and strangulation are the methods of torture that my brother was subject to.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)
