Secretary-General Mohammed Yahya Maktabi said that Assad’s disapproving remarks of the UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, in his latest interview with Al Manar TV indicates he is not a genuine and serious party in the political process, a fact that was clearly demonstrated in the Geneva II negotiations which was were foiled by the Assad regime’s intransigence.
“Bashar al-Assad expects de Mistura to ask him to continue his reign of terror forever and pass it to his children and possibly to his grandchildren, and that the UN envoy remain silent over Assad’s massacres, the most horrifying of which took place in Douma near Damascus,” Maktabi added.
Maktabi stresses that whenever there is a flurry of political activity regarding the situation in Syria, Assad escalates his crimes against the Syrian people, like in Douma, and when he senses change, however slight, in Russia’s position. During the interview, Assad sought to send a message that he is confident of Russian leadership and to refute any change in its position on the Syrian crisis. (Source: Syrian Coalition + Al Arabiya)
