The Syrian Coalition calls on the international community to put pressure on the Assad regime to implement the UN Security Council resolution No.2118 regarding the six points spelled out in the Geneva I communique, the formation of a transitional governing body and the handover of power to a national government devoid of all symbols of tyranny and dictatorship.” It also calls on the brotherly and friendly countries to effectively participate in countering the terrorism practiced by the Assad regime and ISIS. “The intervention of Hezbollah and the other foreign sectarian militias must be condemned and incriminated. We call on all parties to support the political, military and intellectual efforts needed to undermine terrorism and its causes and to develop a strategy to help the Syrian opposition fill the vacuum the would ensue after the expulsion of the terrorist groups out of the areas under their control. Furthermore, we call for stepping up the provision of relief aid to the areas affected by the ongoing war. The UN Security Council Resolution No. 2170 is an important step in the fight against terrorism, but it is incomplete as it does not include the terrorism practiced by the Assad regime and the foreign sectarian militias fighting alongside its side. We in the Syrian Coalition praise the role played by the scholars in the Levant in fighting extremism. Tackling the problem of terrorism requires developing a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond the military side to a comprehensive political solution that achieves the aspirations of the Syrian people and the goals of the revolution. The success of any strategy to counter terrorism in Syria requires supporting the FSA with advanced weapons to defend civilians, specifically anti-aircraft missiles needed to ward off Assad’s air force that has been raining barrel bombs on civilians across Syria. We also call for neutralizing civilians and taking concrete measures to protect them from the effects of any military operations.” The Syrian Coalition concluded its statement welcoming Turkey’s calls to establish a no-fly zone and safe areas under the supervision of the United Nations to provide protection for the millions of displaced persons and refugees and to prevent the Assad regime from continuing to destroy the Syrian cities and towns.
