The Syrian Coalition holds Russia legal responsibility for what is happening in Syria as it is not fully contributing to the efforts aimed at reaching a political solution in accordance with the Geneva communique and the relevant Security Council resolutions. “Strong and healthy relations are built with the people and not with the governments and regimes. We call on Moscow, therefore, to reconsider its policies towards what is happening in Syria.” The Syrian Coalition also stresses that principles of international and humanitarian laws and the Security Council resolutions on Syria place responsibility on the United Nations and the Security Council’s permanent members to push towards the resumption of negotiations to reach a political solution to the conflict in Syria, achieve the aspirations of its people, and bring about a full and real political transition of power from dictatorship to the people. “A political transition will pave the way for building a united and democratic Syria, ruled by a civil pluralistic system that safeguards the dignity of its citizens and their personal freedoms and enables Syrians to redraft the constitution and choose its leaders through free and fair elections.”
The Syrian Coalition praises Russia’s declaration that only a comprehensive political solution can put an end to the humanitarian tragedy and the crimes committed against the Syrian people. The Syrian Coalition added that the intra-opposition consultations began before Russia’s announcement of its intention to host the Moscow conference. “We call on Russia to support the intra-opposition’s dialogue aimed at laying out a common position before Moscow conference.
