The Syrian Coalition defended the opposition High Negotiations Committee’s (HNC) decision to suspend participation in the Geneva talks on Syria due to lack of progress in the humanitarian files.
At a meeting between the Syrian Coalition’s political committee and the Coalition’s members within the opposition’s negotiating delegation, secretary of the political committee Riad al-Hassan said that the Assad regime continues to violate international resolutions on Syria. Hassan called for developing mechanisms to hold violators of the truce to account.
Hassan stressed that negotiations cannot be resumed as long as progress is not made with regard to improving humanitarian conditions through the cessation of the bombings, the delivery of humanitarian aid and the release of detainees.
Hassan pointed out that holding negotiations whilst the Assad regime refuses to improve humanitarian conditions will not yield any tangible results. He warned that the regime’s practices undermine the political process. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
