Officials in the Syrian Coalition said that the main problem in Syria is that neither the Assad regime nor its main ally, Russia, has been held to account for the atrocious crimes they are committing in Syria.
The Coalition’s Secretary-General Abdul Ilah Fahd and a number of political committee members met with a delegation of Turkish journalists in Istanbul on Friday. During the meeting, Fahd said: “Russia is using all its military might against the Syrian people and carrying out indiscriminate attacks on civilians in Aleppo without being held to account for those actions.”
Member of the Coalition Khatib Badlah said that the inaction of the international community and its silence over the war crimes being committed in Aleppo are the main reason behind the tragedy unfolding in the embattled city. He noted that the United Nations has so far failed to enforce any of the resolutions it passed on Syria. The Assad regime and Russia continue to blatantly defy the Geneva Communique of 2012 and the UNSC resolutions which were designed to resolve the conflict, he added.
Badlah pointed out that the UNSC resolution 2139 clearly called for the unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged areas. However, the UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said on a number of occasions that the Assad regime did not allow humanitarian access to all besieged areas, thus confirming the UN’s failure to enforce its resolutions on Syria.
Russia, which calls itself a neutral mediator in Syria, is seeking vehemently to crush the Syrian revolution; force the Syrian people to give up their demands for freedom and dignity; and to rehabilitate the Assad regime, Badlah stressed. He said that the United States, which is supposed to counterbalance Russia in Syria, has so far stood idly by. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Office)
