The Syrian Coalition’s political committee and President Riad Seif met with a delegation from the Kurdish National Council (KNC) headed by Ibrahim Birro in Istanbul on Friday.
The two sides discussed the latest field and political developments in Syria as well as the preparations for the upcoming Riyadh opposition conference due to be held in October.
President Seif gave an overview of the reform process being carried out by the Coalition as well as the work of the Syrian Interim Government and the projects it is implementing in the liberated areas.
President Seif stressed that in addition to being one of the Coalition’s main components, the Council adds more value to the national action. He pointed out that the Coalition comprises the broadest spectrum of the political forces and components of the Syrian society.
Moreover, President Seif stressed the need for greater cooperation in all areas to achieve the goals for which the Syrian Coalition was formed, most notably the overthrow of the Assad regime and the achieving of the demands of the Syrian people for freedom and dignity.
Members of the Council briefed the Coalition on the Councils’ recent visits to Brussels and Moscow and the ideas that were discussed with regards to the political process and Geneva negotiations.
Birro said that the Council is being subjected to oppressive practices by militias of the Democratic Union Party (PYD). He pointed out that the PYD militias closed down more than 50 offices of the Council in Syria as well as detained dozens of its members.
Birro stressed that these militias do not represent the Kurds, adding that the Council has been the most affected by the practices of those militias.
