Head of the Syrian Coalition’s media department Ahmed Ramadan said that the Russian intervention in Syria is aimed at changing the demographic landscape in the country, expanding its control and influence in the largest possible area, and weakening the political and military opposition.
“The fight against terrorism was only a pretext to attack Syria,” Ramadan said in an interview with Geroun News Network. “Moscow has not provided evidence of the death of a single senior terrorist figure in the airstrikes it is launching in Syria.”
Ramadan stressed that the Russian airstrikes on the rebel-held areas have already claimed the lives of hundreds of Syrian civilians.
“Moscow’s strategy is to use the fight against terrorism to achieve political gains as evidenced by the targeting of the Free Syrian Army during the battles against the ISIS extremist group,” Ramadan added.
Ramadan went on to say that “Russia exploits the Syrian conflict to achieve political gains in other parts of the world thus restoring its past glories. In the long run, Russia will pay a heavy price for its actions in Syria as it has become an occupying country in the eyes of the Syrian people.”
“The international community will not allow the Russians to act freely in Syria forever. Russia is fully aware of this, so it is now seeking to reach a quick settlement. It is also aware that it does not have a lot of cards to play and prompt the other parties, especially the United States, to make big concessions.” (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
