The Syrian National Coalition’s Department of External Relations and the Office of Strategic Consulting and the Studies held a joint meeting to study the constitutional provisions related to the basic political, social, economic, and educational principles of the state and the three legislative, executive and judicial powers.
Participants in the meeting stressed the importance of addressing the status of security and military institutions constitutionally. They also discussed the form of government in the country, the national identity, the rights and freedoms, and the future of local administration.
The participants also discussed the transitional provisions and the inclusion of the independent bodies in the new constitution so as to help create the conditions for a safe, neutral environment.
They also discussed the results of the first meeting of the Constitutional Committee and preparations for the next meeting due to be held on November 25.
The participants put forward a set of recommendations to be presented to the political committee and representatives of the Syrian Coalition in the Constitutional Committee to act as a reference for their work.
They stressed that the drafting of a new constitution for the country will not achieve a political solution in Syria as they emphasized the need to discuss the rest of the baskets, especially the baskets of governance and elections. This will allow the full implementation of relevant international resolutions on Syria, most importantly the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN resolution 2254 in the sequence they were laid out.
