The political committee discussed today the presidential statement issued by the United Nations which adopted the proposal put forward by the UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura.
Political committee member Hadi al-Bahra emphasizes that a political solution will not materialize without the presence of international will to oblige the Assad regime to seriously engage in a political transition process and thus enable the Syrian people to draft a new constitution and choose their leaders through free and fair elections.
Bahra pointed out that the Assad regime responded to the presidential statement issued by the United Nations by escalating military operations and committing more crimes against civilians, expressing regret at the lack of international will and seriousness in dealing with the situation in Syria.
He stresses that while the Syrian Coalition’s response to the UN envoy’s initiative and the UN presidential statement is positive and serious, it emphasizes that the proposed operational steps to activate the Geneva statement reflect the aspirations of the Syrian people. He warns of any attempts by all sides to circumvent these aspirations whether through selecting the groups that will discuss these steps or through the mechanisms of decision-making and the bases of negotiation that may result from these mechanism.
Bahra also said that selection of the discussion groups must not give any side opportunity to compromise the Syrian people’s demands or to give the regime’s representative weight equivalent to or greater than the representation of the Syrian people. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
