Ahmed Jakal, member of the political committee, said that the consultations currently underway to suspend the membership of Syria at the UN General Assembly is a good step and comes after many failed attempts by the UN to condemn the Assad regime. “This move could pave the way for stronger initiatives to condemn the Assad regime against. It is a constructive step that implies many meanings, most notably that the international community has become convinced of the need to hold the Assad regime accountable, and that the Syrian people are not let down as there are countries that are trying to protect them from the criminal Assad regime. The importance of this move stems from that it coincides with the farcical elections the Assad regime intends to hold.” Furthermore, Jakal stated that the consultations to pass a UN resolution under Chapter VII that would authorize the delivery of humanitarian aid into Syria through four border crossings without approval from the Assad regime could prevent the regime’s confiscation of the UN relief aid to distribute it to its loyalists who make up 8 to 10% of the population. If this proposal is approved it will ensure the passage of humanitarian across the borders into Syrian territory without the approval of the Assad regime; thus ensuring that the aid will be delivered to the opposition-held areas where more than 50% of the population live below the poverty line. Moreover, Jakal criticizes the Russia’s announcement that it would send observers to oversee the presidential elections “while nine million Syrians have been displaced and 150,000 were killed. The sending of the Russian elections is as farcical as the elections the Assad regime intends to hold over with utter disregard to thousands of victims and the devastation it caused.
