The Syrian Coalition and the Syrian Islamic Council said that Russia is looking for pretexts to displace residents of eastern Ghouta from their homes and bring about a demographic change in the Damascus suburb. They stressed that Moscow rejected all proposals aimed at finding a way to stop mass killings in the area.
Members of the Coalition’s political committee on Monday met with members of the Syrian Islamic Council to discuss the ongoing military escalation in eastern Ghouta, which led to the deaths of hundreds of civilians over the past few days. Head of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Nasr Hariri, attended the meeting.
Vice-president of the Coalition, Salwa Aksoi, stressed that a genocide is taking place in eastern Ghouta, describing it as a disgrace to humanity. She renewed calls for the immediate implementation of UN Security Council resolution 2401.
For his part, Hariri said that the Assad regime and Russia had never complied with resolution 2401, citing the absence of any mechanisms to implement the resolution. He stresses that this situation risks undermining the credibility of the United Nations.
Hariri pointed out that the Syrian Negotiations Commission was communicating with a number of the active players in Syria with the aim of stopping the war crimes that are taking place in eastern Ghouta. He stressed the need for forces of the revolution and the Syrian opposition to unite against all attempts to crush the Syrian revolution.
Member of the Syrian Islamic Council Ayman Shaabani pointed out that Moscow did not accept any proposal for the withdrawal of militants of Al-Nusra Front from eastern Ghouta with the aim of finding a pretext to destroy the area and force the residents out of their homes.
Shaabani called on the Syrian Coalition and Syrian Negotiations Commission to step up political efforts and contacts with countries supporting the Syrian revolution in order to stop the ferocious onslaught on eastern Ghouta and ensure the implementation of resolution 2401 demanding a 30-day ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need.
