Mohamed Khair Banco, member of the political committee, said that human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, have so far failed to help end the suffering of the Syrian people in light of the disabling of the UN Security Council and the absence of the political will to take the necessary measures to bring to justice perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Banco was commenting on the report released by Human Rights Watch which said that though Syria’s arsenal of chemical weapons were destroyed, justice remains elusive for the victims of the chemical weapons attacks on Ghouta, near Damascus, which killed hundreds of innocent civilians. “The international community continues to turn a blind eye to the ongoing crimes of the Assad regime. The United States could have directed the final blow to the embattled Assad regime, which was on the verge of collapse, but all what it did was confiscating the instrument of the crime while letting the Assad regime on the loose to continues its crimes and massacres against the Syrian people. 1500 civilians at least were killed in the chemical weapon attack on East Ghouta, while 230,000 were killed people by other weapons, including the toxic chlorine gas and barrel bombs.” Banco concluded his remarks calling on the international community to abandon its short-lived interests that require tolerating the Assad regime and help the Syrian regain their freedom.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)
