An official in the Syrian Coalition stressed that the international community has a duty to provide protection for Syrian civilians from the ongoing bombing campaign by the Assad regime and its allies.
Hadi al-Bahra, member of the Coalition’s political committee, said that the Syrian people have the right to be protected in safe havens.
Bahra warned of fresh, unprecedented waves of refugees. “If the international community does not act swiftly to put an end to the bombing campaign by the Assad regime and its allies and revitalize the stalled political process, they will have to deal with yet the largest waves of refugees to outside Syria.”
The Assad regime and Russian forces have stepped up the bombing campaign in northwestern Syria since April 26, targeting mainly civilian areas and vital civilian facilities. The airstrikes have so far caused hundreds of civilian casualties as well as destroyed many hospitals and other vital civilian centers.
In its latest regular meeting, the Coalition’s General Assembly discussed the latest political and field developments in Syria, especially the serious military escalation by the Assad regime and Russian forces in Idlib province.
The Coalition stressed that the ongoing brutal bombing campaign should confirm to the international community that the regime continues to show utter disregard for the political process and political solution that is needed to stop the bloodshed and alleviate the suffering of Syrian civilians.
Members of the General Assembly called on the United Nations to condemn the intensified bombing campaign in Idlib and hold those responsible to account; refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court; preserve the Idlib agreement; and help reach a nationwide ceasefire.
