ChargĂ© d’Affaires at the Syrian Embassy in Doha, Bilal Turkiyah, stressed that the international community failed to help the people affected by the earthquake in northwestern Syria. He said that international institutions failed to deliver aid in the first week, leaving the Syrian people to face their fate in front of this disaster.
Turkiyah said in an interview on Al-Jazeera Mubasher channel that the situation is tragic and difficult in northwestern Syria due to the catastrophe of the devastating earthquake, adding that the entry of aid to the affected people could have saved many lives.
Turkiyah stated that the United Nations and its organizations had to declare a state of emergency and bring in rescue teams and heavy equipment, which was the greatest need to rescue those trapped under the rubble.
Turkiyah decried the double standards of the United Nations, as a large number of planes arrived at the airports of Aleppo and Damascus carrying UN aid, stressing that the Assad regime is using the earthquake politically in order to lift the international sanctions imposed on it. He also said that the UN aid going to the regime-areas does not reach those who deserve it.
Turkiyah pointed out that the Syrian people need shelters, where there is a shortage of tents, medical equipment, and urgent relief materials.
